Hi Im Tim, from Sydney, This is my 1600 project
After having a stock rusty L20B powered 1600 for the last 6 years(which i still have), about 2 years ago i decided it was time to find a 1600 and to drop an SR20 in it. Last year in September i found one good enough to do the conversion, 1.5 years of searching paid off.
I found a honey mustard 1972 1600, stock as a rock few little parking dings, few spots of surface rust but thats all.
Of all places i found it in melbourne, so i had it freighted up

Hey Martin, i havent set an ETA on finishing, but hopefully in a couple of months, im just itching to drive it.
There are a few things that need to be done before it is complete.
Finish wiring it up
Exhaust needs to be made for it
Brake lines need to be done ( anyone know how expensive this is, if you do it yourself? i have no lines at all in the car)
Tune
engineering
So hopefully soon
Yeh Steve for sure it will be done, ill kill myself if it isnt lol

Hey Tim, orlando, my mate aaron and my brother have just redone all their lines in their cars using one of the ebay flaring tools.
You can buy the brake line and connectors at any brake shop, then buy an ebay double flaring tool like this
oneAnd maybe a pipe bender as well to suit the brake line size, and you are on your way. You may also need the junction box for the front, so if you are at pick n payless, grab one of those too.
I'll get my brother to post some pics up of his brake lines to give you an idea, also jeff shoesmith has some good pics in his project thread.
I've also got a number for a mobile auto electrician if you need it to.

Cheers Martin,
just at hault at this point cos i wanna save money, and just seeing what the best options were!
Cos i went to my local brake shop who rebuilt my callipers at the front, and they couldnt quote me for doin the lines, but they said anywhere between $500 and $1000
Yeh pics will be good
Cheers Tim

One more option, haven't tried them but seem pretty good, still a slight gamble though ->
Brake line kit from USThe price the brake shop quoted was probably right, its more of a time consuming job doing the lines than anything, but once you know how to do the double flare you'll be able to save yourself alot of coin.

hi
like the project , nice stocker to start with
ive got one of those double flaring tools and they can be a pain to get the hang of
ive bent up brake lines before to the right shape then paid $5 a flair but it was a fair while ago
was the $1000 you were quoted include bending all the lines up?

Hi TD.711 Excellent work just remember everything takes twice as long as you expected. Have you fitted a radiator yet if so what did or are you going to use ?? Also what are you going to do with water outlet [where top radiator hose goes] as I know that this causes some grief because of space and shape issues. Keep up the god work !!!!! Cheers OMD

I'll let TD confirm what he is gunna do on his own car but the normal thing to do is get the SR outlet cut down to suit. I know on the s14/15 ones its pretty easy to do as they simply cut the standard end off and take about 90-100mm out of the length and re-weld.
Summary is that it does require work, but its pretty straight forward.

I got the radiator and water outlets modified, it just made the piping a lot easier, but im still figuring it out at the moment

Apr 22 2008, 10:40 AM
Hey tim, not sure if you have got your piping welded yet, but if you are looking for someone to do it cheap I can recommend Gary @ North Shore Performance Exhausts in Hornsby - 9482 3399.
He did the welding on my piping, and will do you a deal if you pay cash. He also did the rear flange on my 180b for the silencer, good welder.
Any updates on your car while I'm typing?
TD.711
Apr 22 2008, 04:26 PM
Hey Martin, thanks for that, but my mate welded my piping for me, a while back.
Not too much progress to report on the car, surge tank is in, fuel system is almost complete, been helping my mate put his AE86 back together.
Things left to do include:
exhaust
wiring
brake lines
Im keen to buy some sparco sprint seats for it, my head almost hits the roof in the standard seats
will keep you informed if i actually work on the car haha

May 11 2008, 10:44 AM
OK guys, got a little more progress on this thing, fuel system is done, and my mate fabricated a battery tray for me, that will go into the front of the car, i dislike batteries in the boot, due to voltage drop and the headlights are shit enough as it is.
My electronic boost controller has also been wired in and mounted, its a blitz dual sbc
Bought Sparco Sprint buckets during the week also, just waiting to go pick them up, will try and get some pics sooon
Cheers Tim

Cheers Martin, hope that rear quarter does the trick for ur mates car.
Small update, all brake lines have been done by my old man, stoked cost me under $400 to have it all done by him.
Gonna do some work on it this weekend, hopefully have a bit more progress
Cheers Tim

Update, well its been a long time sincei have updated this thread
Well the mighty sr runs, on a very rich base map tune from haltech. Was a bitch for my mate and my old man to figure out, the wiring to the CAS was backwards so we couldnt start her for ages, as soon as that was fixed it turned over first go, no exhaust or radiator or any piping, blew a heap of black smoke, god knows how long since she last ran.
Drove her up and down the street the other week so she goes forward and backwards, and the brakes work too which is good!
Just gotta get off my lazy ass and finsh the thing now,
Sold my green 1600 to martin (dunniss) and my shitty shell to ben (gtr510) so i have no excuses now not too finish her and a bit more motivation to have my own car, sux not having ur own car!!
Hopefully a bit more work and she will be done, have to get some more pics of the progress up soon,
Cheers Tim

Update Car is still at the exhaust shop, exhaust is done, its just a 3 inch mild steel mandrel system, running a modified stainless cheap dumpipe to go between the idler arm of the steering and the engine, to a cat then running a resinator and and offset muffler with a droopy tip. will get pics up as soon as i can get them
Also cooler piping has been re done, fabricator wasnt happy with the originals so got him to re do that. radiator is mounted, injectors, boost controller and all wiring is basically done.
My hi pressure fuel pump shat itself, anyone ever had a new one shit itself?
Car is hopefully finished with all the fabrication this week and also dyno tuned, then i get it back
Well thats what i am hopeing for anyway

Hey Guys, got the car back yesterday, just over 16 months after buying it its now sr20det powered, happy as larry!
Cars making about 170kw atw or around 230hp, could have about 20 more hp in it, but my r200 diff decided to shit itself, so on the lookout for another r200 now!
A big thanks to Linden @ roadrunner fabrications for the exhaust, cooler piping, air box and the mounting of the radiator
Brett for wiring and tuning the car, and fixing all the little faults in it
Craigo, Rick, Den, Danga for all their help.
NOw all is to engineer it and then enjoy it some more, i love the thing!!
And that my rant!

May 3 2009, 03:10 PM

Well just little things, bought some bullet side mirrors and installed them, bought some new front carpet from Knox auto carpet in Victoria,
Bought a R200 lsd for it, havent installed that yet, but have got more motivation foir it now, so will be doing that very soon.
Engineering it very soon, will get pics up when that is done

Hey everyone, long time no post, been a bit lazy!
Rang my engineer this morning and he is flatout for 2 weeks, so cant come and have a look at the car til then.
Other than that the car is basically done, rear venetian is in, put my cd head unit in, new carpet, airbox finally has a lid, r200lsd is in.
So fingers crossed in a few weeks i can drive this thing round legit
